epocrates clinical reference app
How might we...reinvent the leading point of care drug reference tool for modern mobile platforms while maintaining the speed providers require.

Project Role

Concept development and Visual Design

User Need

Doctors must quickly and consistently make accurate decisions. They demand the same and more of their reference tools. The next iteration of Epocrates was to be judged (in downloads and profitability) by its ability to deliver information rapidly, clearly and comprehensively, and with enough flexibility to accommodate different doctors’ usage habits and clinical workflows. And it had to offer a streamlined, polished iOS experience.

Additional Project Goals

  • Create a signature, on-brand look and feel.

  • Improve the premium product offering and in-app marketing.

  • Upgrade in-app clinical tools such as Pill ID, Interaction Check, and Guidelines.

  • Provide a robust newsfeed presenting a mix of relevant owned and sponsored content.

Results

  • App attained an extended feature position in the medical section of the App Store and tallied an impressive 2,230 downloads per day.

  • Sponsored bookings increased several fold without negatively impacting NPS or App Store rating.

  • Generated user loyalty, excitement and demand that led to epocrates’ IPO and eventual $300M acquisition by athenahealth.
